Cactus Country

The drive from Tucson to Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument is ideal if you enjoy cactus. So many varieties : cholla, prickly pear, the majestic saguaro, organ pipe, barrel, and even a senita. As we entered the monument we saw brittle bush in full flower. The ocotillos have little green leaves as does the creosote. As usual we saw little wildlife — deer in Katherine and John’s subdivision in Tucson and ravens flying overhead on the way to Organ Pipe National Monument. That’s it.

The trip from Tucson took us around the mountains to the west of Tucson and then through the Tohono O’Odham reservation. A few cows and a fire on a distant hillside, to which we saw three fire trucks racing, were the only things to note. We stopped a couple times for David to take pictures.

We have booked five nights here as there are plenty of nice walks and drives and because we have good ATT internet we will stay here to watch the Super Bowl. The sites here are very nice, reasonably private, and cheap — $10 a night with our Senior Citizen Interagency Pass. No electric or water on site, but potable water at the dump station.
