Austin to Del Rio

Austin to Del Rio

Pleasant drive today under blue skies.  Pleasant except for the traffic jam in San Antonio — too much construction and too many cars.  Once past the bottleneck, it was clear sailing.

We stopped in Castroville for a nice walk at their regional park.  Nice trails, both packed gravel and some more rugged ones up into the nearby hills.  David wasn’t too interested in the hillside hike after he saw the sign warning of black widows, coral snakes, bob cats, poison oak, and feral hogs.  Janet concurred.

From Castroville to our  campsite at Seminole Canyon SP was a fast drive on US 90 through arid scrub-land dotted with cattle and sheep.  There was the occasional small town.  We passed through Uvalde TX and saw Robb Elementary — a somber sight with a memorial of crosses in front.  Uvalde is a charming town with some lovely old mission style buildings.

After settling in our campsite (17), we took a short walk on the bird trail, a nature trail with plants identified ending in a bird blind.  Outside the blind the rangers have built a rock water fountain to encourage the birds to visit.  Heard a cactus wren and some sparrow.

Dinner tonight was leftovers from our Chinese meal.  Janet joined a zoom meeting with Artists’ Own.  We have excellent internet with our hotspot here and great ATT cell phone service.
