Wood Islands to Caribou Ferry

We left Cavendish NP campground in a gentle rain and headed to The Wood Island Ferry terminal on the south side of the island with stops at the North Rustico fish market (excellent), the Atlantic Superstore in Charlottetown for groceries, and Walmart for a pair of jeans for Janet since she had managed to not pack any — it’s gotten cold for the first time.

Once shopping was complete we headed south on Canada route 1. The drive was through lovely farm country — hay, soy beans, and potatoes. We got to the ferry in plenty of time for the 2:45 ferry, but our reservation was for 6:00. We were told we couldn’t wait in the reserved line, but that we would probably make the ferry. We did, with no problem. There was plenty of room — only one semi was traveling and there was probably room for two or three more.

The crossing on the Confederation was delightful. Lots of cormorants and gulls sitting on the shore on both ends. A bit of a roll because of high winds, but nothing to make us sick. David suggested that we should celebrate our anniversary — 51 years today— with an ice cream cone — Canada’s best ice cream.

Our campground for the next two nights, Caribou-Monroe Islands Provincial Park was just a few minutes from the ferry. We settled in and enjoyed an anniversary dinner of mussels and clam chowder.
