Black River Harbor to Madeline Island

As we drove to Bayfiled WI we enjoyed a pleasant drive along a typical north country highway with a stop at a Walmart for groceries .

Bayfiled was busy with tourists and a very busy gas station as it is the only one in town. Diesel is available on the island but we decided to fill up anyway as we use the diesel for heating since we will not be “plugged in” at our campground on the island.

The ferry to Madeline Island was surprisingly expensive. Unfortunately our van is 1 foot longer than the $52 (44 more for the occupants) round-trip fare so we had to pay $222 including our personal fare. The trip across was pleasant, taking about 25 minutes.

Since our campsite was not available until 3 PM, we walked around LaPointe stopping at the Bell Street Gallery (excellent, high quality work), another gallery with less high quality work, and the historical museum where we watched a movie and enjoyed viewing the very excellent displays.

Our campsite is a large private one with a picnic table and fire ring. There are many electric sites but ours is not. There are restrooms with flush toilets and hot showers.

After settling in we took a short walk to the beach. The cold breeze off the lake would indicate that the water was very cold but there were two children swimming anyway. However, when the family packed up for the day the mother offered them hot showers before dinner.

Our internet is poor unless we are using antennas and the booster. Near the lake we can text and receive some notifications. Later we managed to stream some TV in the van.
