San Rafael Swell Campsite

San Rafael Swell Campsite

After a lazy morning in the van admiring the view and waiting for it to warm up, we walked over to a nearby 4-wheel track that was to take us to Martha’s Trail.  We found no trail, but did have a nice conversation with a guy from Texas who drives up here to camp regularly.

We returned to the van and David set up our awning to give us a bit of shade. Unfortunately, as we sat there, a sudden gust of wind lifted the awning and tore it away from the anchors on the side of the van.  It was lifted — metal tie downs and all — over the van.  The metal poles hit the far side of the van and broke one of our windows.

So we spent the rest of the afternoon rolling up the awning on the roof of the van and cleaning up shattered glass from outside and inside the van.  Then we covered the window with trash bags and duct tape.  That is all we have until we get to Green River — about 40 miles away.  We will see how it stands up to interstate speeds.

What a day.
