Glacier Highway

Rain and more rain. Today it really poured. Rather than hiking we drove north from Juneau on the Glacier Highway stopping at any interesting turnouts and walking about when the rain wasn’t too bad. We found a couple of interesting places. One was the Shrine of St Therese. The shrine is a gem of a building built on its own island using the rocks from the beach there. In addition there are stone structures depicting Christ’s final hours (the Stations of the Cross) and lovely gardens which include a labyrinth and columbarium made of polished black granite. A truly tranquil and lovely place accessed by a footpath causeway. Further north we stopped at Amalga Harbor. Here is a very busy harbor with two boat ramps for sport fishermen. It was low tide and fish were jumping and eagles swooping for the remains being tossed in the water by two fishermen cleaning silver salmon on the dock. We enjoyed watching the eagles fighting over the fish remains and decided we should return to take the short walk in the area tomorrow when, we hoped, it would not be raining so hard. After a stop at Walmart and Fred Meyer, where we were able to buy a card table to replace the one that had been stolen in Petersburg, we headed home for the night.
