Petersburg II

A very rainy day so we went into town to do our two weeks of wash, see the museum, and use the Wi-Fi at the library.  We also visited the two hardware stores in town to see if they had replacement chairs for the ones which had been stolen.  These stores seem to operate on the motto: “If we don’t have it, you don’t need it,” so we have two new chairs – even had a selection.  Our guess is that with the number of active fishing boats and logging boats in town, the hardware stores need to be well-stocked.

At the museum there was an interesting video about salmon fishing pre-1959.  At that time fishing traps were still legal.  These traps were so efficient that the entire run up a steam might be caught.  The pictures of the thousands of salmon being loaded into boats for a trip to the cannery were impressive.  The area still supports two large canneries which open this week as most of the big fishing seasons open tomorrow (Sunday).  Unfortunately, the canneries do not allow visitors, a recent change because of OSHA requirements.

We spent the night along Sumner Strait in a “logging transfer station.”  Dinner was smoked salmon, potatoes and onions, and salad.
