Klondike Highway

I am embarrassed to say that I found today’s ride a bit boring. The trip along the Klondike Highway from Dawson City toward Whitehorse passes through spruce and birch forest and more spruce and birch forest. The only difference is how tall the trees are and which variety predominates (depends upon when the last fire was). There were two Yukon River bridge crossings, an occasional lake or river view, and two places to stop for fuel. The road was generally in good condition, but there were enough frost heaves and potholes that the driver could not be lulled into inattention.

Fortunately the day ended on a high note. We found a beautiful Yukon Territorial Park to spend the night. It is on a lake and is quiet and peaceful. David built a fire with the wood provided and roasted vegetables which we had with smoked salmon and salad.

Tatchun Lake Territorial Park Campground Review: This peaceful campground is reached by a 5-mile good, gravel road. The 20 sites are deep and flat gravel pads surrounded by tall spruce. Pit toilets, picnic tables, fire pits, and hand-pumped water are available (boil for 2 minutes). The lake, with a dock suitable for swimming or canoe or kayak launching, is a short walk from the picnic area. There is a power boat launch about 2 miles back toward the highway. Fee: $12.
