Pattison State Park
It was less than an hours drive from our Brule River site to Pattison State Park, just south of Superior. As it was too early to check in, we immediately went to the overlook for the Big Manitou Falls for a hike. The falls, the highest in Wisconsin, and the fourth highest in the US are quite impressive especially with such a large amount of recent rainfall.
After wandering around the trails near the falls we headed to the main parking lot where we picked up the Beaver Trail which circles the Interfalls Lake. A lovely, relatively level 2-mile trail following the lake edge . Occasionally muddy, but mostly covered with basalt gravel. At one end of the lake is a bridge that was originally built by the CCC. There are also two buildings near the parking lot built by the CCC— made from granite hewed with chisel and mallet into squares and rectangles.
Upon returning toour van, we drove to the Little Manitou Falls which are at the south end of the park. Another lovely falls, but not as impressive as the 165 foot drop of the “big” falls.
We now could check into our site, #6. The sites are almost all pull thoughts with a picnic table and fire ring. Some are electric, but not ours. There are facilities with flush toilets and showers as well as an RV dump. We stayed in the van for dinner as it was quite cold. Dinner was leftovers, broccoli, and a salad. Tomorrow we head to Superior to meet Eric’s parents.
