Mustang Island State Park
Last year on our way north we had spent a night at Mustang Island State Park, but it was so windy, rainy, and cold that we were unable to enjoy the beach. Today we returned to the state park with hopes of enjoying a nice beach walk. Today’s weather was windy, cool, and sunny — almost perfect for a walk on the beach.
The beach here is very flat and gently sloped to the sea. Smooth sand, few shells, very little junk washed up. The top of the beach is 10-foot high, grass covered dunes. Primitive camping is permitted just beachside of the dunes.
This park also has the advantage that it has a clear view of the eastern sky so that David could arise early and see the alignment of 5 planets — Mercury, Saturn, Mars, Jupiter, and Venus. A good sight of six planets, including Earth, just before dawn.
We are thinking of our friends and family who are in the path of the “Snow storm of the century.” Want you to know that spring is on the way — here the gaillardia are in bloom and the farmers are preparing the fields for planting. Also the Walmart parking lots are stocking up with bags of potting soil and fertilizer and hardy perennials.
Mustang Island State Park Review: The advantage of this campground is that you are a 5 minute walk to the beach. Other than that it is a parking lot with back-in/pull-in spaces on each side equipped with a shelter with picnic table, electric, and water. The staff at the office is extremely helpful and friendly.
