Alamo Canyon
We left Twin Peaks Campground at Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument to head north a few miles to Alamo Canyon. At the end of the Alamo Canyon Road (dirt) is a small, 4-site campground (with tables, grills, and a pit toilet) and a hiking trail into the canyon. No TV but good cell service with our booster.
The road was in good shape as it was being graded after last night’s rain. We stopped for a short hike along the trail the follows the old Sonoyta Road. The desert here was lovely as the poppies and brittle bush were coming into bloom.
At the campground we were able to secure a site (eventually all four sites would fill) and took the hike into the canyon. The hike is a level one which parallels, and eventually crosses, a wash. It leads to the ruins of a farm house and officially ends at the farm’s pasture paddock. From that point one can continue on and walk up through one of three washes. The entire hike is an easy one with lots of huge boulders to walk around.
Throughout the area are signs warning of smuggling and illegal immmigration in the area. We also saw stations (solar powered) where one could push a button to summon aide if needed. The directions were to push red button if in need and stay near the box.
We enjoyed our meal — grilled steak and asparagus, sweet potatoes, and salad — while watching the sun set over the mountains.
