Goose Island State Park
Before leaving Brazos Bend SP we took a walk around Elm Lake. Once again we were impressed with the wildlife we saw — alligators, tons of whistling ducks, heron of every variety, coots, and egrets. A great walk — just over 2 miles.
From there we headed south toward Corpus Christi. Our next stop was Goose Island State Park just north of Corpus Christi. The park has two campgrounds — one right on the San Antonio Bay, the other under the live oak trees. Our site is amazingly private — we cannot see any of our neighbors.
After settling in we took a walk to the bay. There are both White and Brown pelicans as well as a myriad of plovers, sandpipers, and gulls. A fisherman was cleaning a fish and dozens of pelicans surrounded him, demanding the trimmings. Quite a sight. When we left for the bayfront, the weather was sunny and warm — requiring shorts — but as we walked along the beach, the fog rolled in and the temperature dropped. Not unpleasant, but cooler.
Goose Island SP review: All sites in the woodland area are private, some more than others. These sites have electric, sewer, picnic table, and water. On the bayfront you are parked along the beach, one next to the other. Each bayfront site has electric and a concrete shelter with picnic table. At the bayfront is a long fishing pier which takes you way out into the bay. Like all Texas State Parks, the staff is helpful and friendly.
