Seminole Canyon State Park
After leaving Eagle Pass, we had a relatively short drive to the Seminole Canyon State Park about 35 miles west of Del Rio. Unfortunately it was raining, but we secured a site for a two-night stay.
The rain finally cleared leaving us with a cold, windy, gloomy day; good enough for a couple of mile walk along the Canyon Rim. Native Americans stayed in this area since water was available in the canyon. There are numerous pictographs which can be seen if you walk to the end of the trail.
Our plan was to walk the entire trail in the morning, but were awakened to a helicopter circling over the canyons. Our park host informed us that there was no danger, but that no hiking would be permitted until the “criminal situation” resolved. We understood later that this was not a case of people coming across the border into the USA, but rather someone fleeing law enforcement.
After taking care of a couple of housekeeping chores we decided to move on since it was not clear we would be able to leave the confines of our van during the day. On the way out the border patrol stopped us and asked for permission to search our van to make sure we had no extra passengers.
Perhaps we can stop here on our way back east next month.
Seminole Canyon Campground Review: Nicely spaced campsites with good views of the surrounding area. About half have electric and water, rest are primitive. Our campsite had a gravel tent pad, picnic table under a shelter, and was very level. Staff is very pleasant. Nice hikes have trail heads right at the campground.
