Saskatoon

Today we just drove a short way, about 80 miles to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. We needed a “housekeeping day” and the city seemed like a good place. We found a lovely campground with good Wi-Fi and a good laundry. After a trip to the grocery and lunch, we went for a few mile walk along the South Saskatchewan River. The city has installed a walking/bike path along the west side of the river and is in the process of creating a riverside park in the downtown area. It was really quite nice – except it was 85-degrees and the sun was quite brutal. We have had so little hot weather so far this summer that this was quite a shock to our systems. But there was a breeze, and the walk along the river was pleasant. It was fun to watch the jet-skiers and kayakers; at one point an old stern wheeler, the Prairie Lily, came by with a load of sightseers.

Back at the campground I spent an hour and a half at the laundry. I must say that I have become a bit of a connoisseur of laundries while on this trip, and this was among the best. It was clean and had an adequate number of machines that worked well. Seems that is obvious and should be universal, but it is not.

We had a dinner of leftovers and sat around in the shade, keeping cool.

Gordon Howe Campground Review: 130 sites with a large overflow area. The main campground is lovely with large, shady sites separated by high, deep hedges. There is a variety of amenities – some with electric and water, some unserviced. The overflow lot is a large grassy area with some trees on the edge and no services. There is an RV dump, Wi-Fi, laundry, and campstore. The campstore has more than the usual junk food, rather has an excellent collection of frozen foods (some homemade) in quantities appropriate for 1-2 people camping. The campground staff is accommodating and very efficient. Fees vary depending upon the site — $17 to $35.
