Ellison Dam State Park

We left home and headed to Fredericksburg MD, but our plans changed when we received a message that our friend Bill had a family emergency so we would not be visiting. David immediately found a place nearby in Ohio for us to spend two nights.

Ellison Dam SP is a tiny, not particularly interesting park right on the Muskegon River. There is an old, dilapidated, unusable lock at this point. The camping sites are generally level and have fire rings and picnic tables. All Ohio state parks can be purchased on the day of arrival by going online. Fortunately we had just enough cell service to accomplish this.

The nicest thing about the park was its proximity to two very nice hiking trails. One was a “rail to trail “ along the river which was used by the local cross country/track team for training. This trail is in walking distance from the park and has a spur that took us to the old rail bridge across the river. Which is now a pedestrian crossing.

The second trail , which was a short drive, was the Marie Hickey Trail — a 2-mile loop trail trough a hardwood forest. Very pleasant.
