Morgan Falls

Morgan Falls

The day was sunny with clouds rolling in and out.

We found a trailhead to Morgan Falls and St. Peter’s Dome off the Ashland-Bayfield Road — a dirt road that runs between County Roads GG and E.  The 4 mile hike to the dome and back with a visit to the falls was a pleasure.  Lots of maple and birch with a fair amount of hemlock.  The trail is mainly level until the turnout to the falls where it begins a 300 foot elevation change.  The falls are spectacular — different colors of rocks and lots of mosses framed by the yellowing birch and maple.  The view from the dome was equally spectacular.  We could see all the way to Ashland and Lake Superior.  At the top we had a pleasant conversation with a Michigan family who were visiting family in Bayfield.

After our hike down, David flew the quadcopter so that we had an even better view of the area than from the dome and so that our acquaintances could see a drone fly.

A short 25 miles away from the trailhead we found Two Lakes National Forest Service Campground.  We had stayed at Two Lakes in the past when Amanda attended a gymnastics camp further down the lake so were happy that it had not yet closed for the season.  Our site, #6, was right on Lake Owen.  We had no neighbors except the loons and bald eagles.

Review of Two Lakes CG:  Two Lakes is a huge (93 sites) campground between Lake Owen and Bass Lake.  The sites are large and private and many are located right on the lake with their own “beach.”  There is a swimming beach and boat launch.  Amenities include water spigots throughout the camp, pit toilets, and fire rings.  Downed wood may be gathered and wood is usually available for purchase — but not this week.  ATT 4G internet was received.  On our visit more than one-half of the campground was closed for the winter. Maps for this area alternatively call this Two Lakes CG and Twin Lakes CG; the first is the correct name, but to highlight the confusion:  Google maps calls the campground Two Lakes, but marks the roads through it as Twin Lakes!

At Two Lakes CG we get great AT&T 4G internet and good TV from Duluth.  No electric.
